BLOOD PRESSURE
In a clinical study on the cardioprotective qualities of Extra Virgin Olive Oil conducted by La Trobe University and published in Nutrients, it was found that the consumption of four spoons a day (60ml) of Olive Oil can reduce central and peripheral systolic pressure by 2.5% and 2% respectively. There is recent evidence showing that in hypertensive patients Olive Oil, consumed together with the daily dose of necessary drugs, helps to decrease systolic blood pressure, probably due to the reduction of nitric acid caused by polyphenols.
ATHEROSCLEROSIS
It has been demonstrated that Olive Oil has a preventive effect on the formation of blood clots and platelet aggregation. Numerous studies have observed how, in countries where Olive Oil is the main fat consumed, there is a lower incidence of deaths from heart failure (the leading cause of mortality worldwide). On the other hand, by preventing excessive blood clotting, it mitigates the effect of fatty foods by encouraging the formation of blood clots.
DIABETES
A diet rich in olive oil is not only useful in the treatment of diabetes, but can also help to prevent or delay the outbreak of the disease, a real natural drug. This was established by a study of the Sapienza University of Rome, published in "Nutrition & Diabetes". From the research it emerges that a dose of 10 ml per day behaves as an oral antidiabetic with a mechanism similar to the new generation drugs, i.e. the incretins (natural hormones produced at gastrointestinal level that reduce the level of blood glucose). It also prevents insulin resistance and its possible pernicious implications, increases HDL ('good') cholesterol, lowers triglycerides, and provides better control of blood sugar levels.These benefits have been documented in both childhood and adult diabetes.
